Riverdale Ecology have gone Thermal – We have recently purchased an IRay-E6 pro Thermal Imaging monocular for use on bat surveys. Thermal imaging cameras are designed to detect heat (infrared radiation) emitted from objects including metabolic heat produced by bats and other animals which is detectable against the thermal signature of background levels. The ability to detect the heat emitted from bats allows observation of bats within and emerging from roost sites, foraging and commuting bats all providing greater accuracy in data collection. Although we have been using this technology for several years, we have previously brought in specialist surveyors when required for specific projects. We are now able to utilise this exciting technology on routine building inspections and bat surveys to ensure surveys for our clients are carried out to the highest technical specification. The thermal camera is also a useful tool for carrying out nesting bird checks and can detect the body temperature of birds and even eggs in a nest to accurately locate active bird nests.
